This Privacy Policy explains how Campster handles information when you use the Campster mobile app and website. Campster helps you discover campsites, view campsite details, save places, and plan camping trips.
Who we are
Campster is built by Niels Joop. For privacy questions, account deletion requests, or data requests, contact us at support@campster.local. Replace this placeholder address with the public support address before publishing the app.
Information we process
Location. If you give permission, Campster uses your device location to show campsites near you. You can deny or disable location access in your device settings. The app can still be used by searching and browsing the map manually.
Search, map, and campsite requests. When you search or move around the map, Campster sends the search text, map area, filters, and selected campsite IDs to the Campster API so it can return relevant campsite information.
Local planning data. Favorites, want-to-go lists, trips, recent searches, and onboarding preferences such as camping mode are stored on your device. This data is not synced to a Campster account in the current app unless a future version clearly adds syncing.
Account and owner-claim data. If you log in or claim a campsite, Campster may process your email address, display name, login provider identifier, session information, campsite claim email, claim status, verification attempts, and owner membership information.
Technical data. Our servers and service providers may process basic technical information such as IP address, device/browser information, request time, and error logs to operate and secure the service. The website checks your browser user agent locally to choose the right app-store button.
How we use information
We use information to provide campsite search and map features, show nearby campsites, save your preferences on your device, manage account login, verify campsite ownership claims, send verification emails, protect the service from abuse, fix bugs, and respond to support or legal requests.
Legal bases
Where EU or similar privacy laws apply, we rely on consent for optional device permissions such as location, contract necessity to provide app features you request, legitimate interests to secure and improve Campster, and legal obligations where we must keep or disclose limited information.
Sharing
We do not sell your personal data. We share information only when needed to run Campster, such as with hosting providers, email providers used for login or claim verification, app stores, and legal or safety authorities where required. Campsite information may come from public or third-party sources such as OpenStreetMap, Wikimedia Commons, official campsite websites, and similar open mapping or media sources.
Retention and deletion
Local planning data stays on your device until you delete it, reset the app data, or uninstall the app. Account sessions are designed to expire, and email verification codes and claim verification links expire after short periods. Account, claim, and owner-membership records are kept while needed to provide the service, verify ownership, prevent abuse, comply with legal obligations, or resolve disputes.
If you created an account and want it deleted, contact us at the support address above. Deleting an account may remove or anonymize account-related data, except where we need to keep limited records for security, fraud prevention, legal compliance, or dispute resolution.
Your choices and rights
You can control location access in your device settings, delete local saved data by clearing app data or uninstalling the app, and request access, correction, deletion, portability, restriction, or objection where applicable. You may also withdraw consent for optional permissions at any time.
If you are in the European Economic Area, United Kingdom, or a similar jurisdiction, you may have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.
Security
Campster uses reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect information, including HTTPS for API requests and hashed server-side tokens or verification codes where applicable. No internet service can be guaranteed to be completely secure.
Children
Campster is not directed to children. If you believe a child has provided personal information without appropriate consent, contact us so we can review and delete it where required.
Changes
We may update this policy when Campster changes or legal requirements evolve. If changes are material, we will make reasonable efforts to notify users through the app, website, or store listing.
